WORLD MUSIC Indonesia - The Rough Guide To The Music Of Indonesia (2000)
Forget the horrors of last year's civil war: dive into this enchanting medley of sounds from Java and Sumatra. After the Portuguese and Dutch had left their mark, president Sukarno outlawed Western pop and decreed that all music should be Indonesian; Suharto reversed the process, welcoming in Western styles. The result is some lovely stuff, fusing East and West, and heavily laced with flute and percussion; the singers' voices have the child-like quality you find in southern India. Here are the king and queen of "dangdut", the quintessential Indonesian style, plus exponents of all the other main musical strands; here, also, are some fascinating tracks from medieval balladry uncontaminated by outside influences. The liner notes seem unaware of the best story lurking in these tracks: you will need the Rough Guide to World Music to discover that Indonesian superstar Sabah Habas Mustapha is actually a Brit. And it might have been appropriate to indicate how the groups represented here--particularly the Islamic ones--relate to last year's sectarian battle-lines. But never mind, perhaps they just played on regardless. -- Michael Church
