SONY Rose Garden/You're My Man [Remastered] (1970)
These two albums were recorded by California-born former junior quarterhorse-riding champion Anderson during a period of prolific output at the beginning of the 1970s. The title track of Rose Garden was an immense hit on both sides of the Atlantic and is about the only song for which she is remembered. A shame and an injustice, as this fine pair of albums demonstrates that she had a rare ease with both the pop ballad and the country song. On "I'm Gonna Write a Song"--written, like many of the tracks collected here, by her then-husband Glenn Sutton--she sounds precariously close to yodelling (Sutton, incidentally, also wrote the devotional title track of You're My Man , suggesting that modesty was not chief among his virtues). The best moments on these records come when Anderson tackles the songs of Kris Kristofferson. Her plaintive reading of "Help Me Make it through the Night" is gorgeous, and her monumental version of "Sunday Morning Coming Down" is more than worth the purchase price on its own. --Andrew Mueller
