Island Analyze That (Original Soundtrack) (2002)

For the soundtrack to Analyze That , the sequel to Robert De Niro mob comedy Analyze This (1999), composer David Holmes has provided a little bit of this, that and the other; the latter coming via erotic female vocal samples in edgy dance numbers, "Opening Credits" and "Strip Club". Holmes, having worked previously on Steven Soderbergh's Ocean's Eleven (2001) and Out of Sight (1998), may still be a cinematic newcomer but has distaff qualifications for the current project. In 1992 he sampled Ennio Morricone's theme to the Robert De Niro gangster epic Once upon a Time in America (1984) and had a massive club hit with the result, "De Niro". Since then he has spent as much time remixing the likes of U2, The Manic Street Preachers and Ice Cube as penning movie scores, and his work on Analyze That is deeply informed by his dance, funk, jazz and blues sensibility. The score spans funky techno stylings, "Getting the Gold", jazzy, Herbbie Hancock-like funk, "Drive to the Heist", Santana-esque horn-laden Latin electric jazz-rock, "Going Up in the Van", Miles Davis-influenced free jazz, "Spell Rigazzi", Mancini-like romantic MOR, "Sushi Bar" and more, making this a diverse, sharply produced set, which at 30 minutes is in little danger of outstaying its welcome. -- Gary S Dalkin
