Dreyfus Viaggio
Master jazz accordionist Richard Galliano highlights his improvisational skills and those of his band in this plaintive, ebullient collection of originals. Beginning with the breezy "Waltz For Nicky", this 1993 album also showcases the accordionist's gift for thematic exposition. The virtuoso guitar work of sideman Bireli Lagrene is weaved throughout Viaggio , while bassist Pierre Michelot and drummer Charles Bellonzi underscore the poignancy with proportion and assured direction. In "Java Indigo", Galliano demonstrates his unique ability to disassemble and rethink the components of his music, putting the parts back together in unexpected ways. This is particularly true of the title track, an invigorating blending of French lyricism and Brazilian samba. Though upbeat tracks such as "Tango pour Claude" and "Coloriage" are welcome in their stylistic familiarity, the ensemble is equally effective during the introspective "Christopher's Boss", the understated, lyrical threnody of "Romance" and the wistfully concluding track "La Liberte est une Fleur". Galliano even adds the piano to his repertoire of instruments in the eloquent "Billie". The entwining embellishments of the group are always well integrated, and the results are spirited and unashamedly life-affirming.
